Federal and state authorities have launched an investigation following a cyberattack targeting the Jackson County computer network. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that portions of the county’s digital infrastructure were compromised. Upon discovering the breach, local officials immediately began coordinating with state and federal partners to isolate the threat and maintain the security of government operations. Despite the breach, county leadership reports that the impact has been successfully mitigated. According to a news release, there is currently no indication that County hardware, Sensitive data or Taxpayer funds were compromised. While the systems remain operational, it remains unclear exactly how long the network was impacted or if specific digital services were temporarily disabled during the initial attack. The investigation is a collaborative effort involving several high-level security agencies such as the FBI, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Indiana Department of Homeland Security and Jackson County Local Officials. The investigation remains ongoing as technicians work to further fortify the county’s network against future threats. Officials have not yet commented on the source of the attack or the specific methods used by the intruders.

Authorities have recovered the body of a missing man whose vehicle was swept into the East Fork White River in Shoals. 82 year old James Petty of Fortville was found Monday afternoon around 1:45 p.m. inside his truck, which was resting on the river bottom in 30 feet of water. Indiana Department of Natural Resources conservation officers utilized advanced sonar technology to pinpoint the vehicle’s location near Spout Springs Road, just south of Shoals. The tragedy began around 2:37 p.m. last Monday when Petty’s truck was carried off the roadway by swift-moving floodwaters. While Petty remained with the vehicle as it was pulled downstream, a passenger in the truck managed a remarkable escape that officials are now highlighting as a life-saving example. According to Indiana Conservation Officers, the passenger unbuckled his seatbelt, rolled down the window, and jumped from the truck as it moved into the current. The passenger was able to grab onto a nearby tree vine and call 911 while suspended over the water. Members of the Shoals Volunteer Fire Department and the Martin County Sheriff’s Department launched a rescue boat and successfully pulled the passenger to safety. While sonar equipment had identified a possible location for the truck earlier in the week, recovery efforts were stalled for days by dangerous river conditions.

After a brief search, the male, identified as 27 year old Gary Wells II of Orleans emerged from the wood line wet and covered in debris. Corley was located shortly after shivering near a tree. Both individuals initially denied driving the vehicle, but Corley allegedly admitted to driving when officers informed her they had surveillance footage from a local gas station. Due to the cold temperatures and the suspects’ level of intoxication, both were transported for medical clearance and processing. Corley reportedly refused field sobriety tests, prompting a search warrant to be issued for a blood draw at IU Health Bedford. Corley is facing charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while her driver’s license was suspended, and public intoxication. Wells II is facing charges of public intoxication. Both individuals were booked into the Lawrence County Jail.

The City of Mitchell has been awarded $500,000 in federal grant funding to demolish a building deemed unsafe on Main Street. Vacant for about the past 15 years, the downtown structure has served as a bank, dry cleaners and later was the headquarters of the Mitchell Police Department. Mitchell Mayor Don Caudell said the city had explored whether the building could be renovated and saved for a new use before making the decision to tear it down. Without a feasible option, the city applied for a grant from Indiana’s Office of Community and Rural Affairs, which administers a Blight Clearance Program.  Once the building is razed and the site cleaned up, it will become a public green space. Since it is located next to Friendship Park, it will allow the city to expand the green space that’s already there. Demolition likely won’t happen until later this year. Caudell said architects and engineers will need to inspect the building and determine steps for removal since the building is adjacent to Main Street Raceway, a slot car racing business. Across the street is another downtown building that is in disrepair and deemed unsafe. Safety fencing surrounds that structure that for many years was an antique shop.

Nine Indiana counties will receive retroactive Secure Rural Schools payments from the U.S. Forest Service for 2024. Payments to the Indiana counties total $240,813. Counties receiving funds are Crawford, Lawrence, Martin, Orange, Dubois, Perry, Brown, Jackson and Monroe. They receive these funds because the Hoosier National Forest has land within their counties.  According to the Forest Service, these payments help sustain public schools, maintain local roads, strengthen wildfire preparedness and support other essential services in rural communities. The 2024 payments include Title I and Title III allocations, which help fund education, transportation infrastructure and critical community services in rural areas. They also enhance wildfire readiness at the local level, reimbursing counties for emergency services on national forests, and supporting the development of Community Wildfire Protection Plans. Since 1908, 25% of Forest Service revenue from timber sales, mineral leases, livestock grazing, recreation fees and other sources have been shared with states and counties containing national forests. By the 1990s, long-term reductions in timber revenue significantly reduced these payments, prompting Congress to enact the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act of 2000 to provide more stable funding for at-risk local services. Over the past decade, the Forest Service has distributed $2.6 billion through the SRS program.

A Lawrence County man was arrested after a nearly half hour vehicle pursuit Saturday night. Police recognized the driver as 53 year old Neil Tomson of Mitchell from prior knowledge of an active arrest warrant and a lack of a valid driver’s license. After stopping briefly, Tomson refused orders to exit the vehicle and fled a second time. The ensuing pursuit lasted 27 minutes with Tomson crossing into Martin County. The pursuit ended when Tomson drove down a dead-end road, abandoned the vehicle, and fled into the woods. Police pursued Tomson through the wooded area and noticed him throwing a cigarette carton into the woods before he was brought into custody. The carton was found to contain three separate plastic bags of meth, eight pills, a Schedule II controlled substance, and marijuana. At the time of the arrest, Tomson was also wanted on three active warrants: two out of Martin County and one out of Lawrence County. Tomson is facing charges of resisting law enforcement, possession of meth, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, and operating a vehicle while never licensed.
